 Commentary

*"Arthur," again, a reference to arthritis."

**"Sistuh’s Boy" is Sam Junior, called Sonny.

***Other than to Baltimore, Mama never traveled. She was too busy making a living and holding together her family. She only got to do recreational traveling after she had retired. That occurred either through the church, or the Senior Citizens Center, or her daughter Lucinda. She, however, never dared the skies and boarded an airplane. She has never, I believe, ridden a train for long distances.

****The "Church" is Jerusalem Baptist, the mother of local churches. As the story goes, in the late 19th century or maybe the early 20th, dissenting members left Jerusalem and started other churches in a radius of five to ten miles. . . . Hudy, I believe, was buried in Southampton, an adjoining county, the home of Nathaniel Turner. Our blood relationships can also be found in Southampton. Many left Southampton and came to Sussex or Greensville counties to live and make a home.

*****When this letter was written, I was beginning my second year in the English graduate program at Maryland.
