Always in Love the First Time

A jealous critic of my “Poem to Evelyn” sent me a letter

this morning, multiple pages of accusations of public betrayal.

I said, Hello. Satan  pull up a chair. She's low down with Jesus

 

on a pallet by her  bed. She’s logged crimes against her heart

with great sincerity & conviction. I let the leaves fall to the floor.

My  fingers are tight in my palm as the curtain rises for the drama.

 

I bless her with silence the way one fixes a lover at a train station.

At the bar I say, Brother, give me another pint. In a sweat, I strip

bare for a dance with she masked darkly.  Two legs crossed conceal

 

an inviolate darkness.  In the ceiling mirror cloven feet rip the sheets

of my bed of jasmine. In a spider’s belly, I’m merely a morsel of meat,  

once wrapped in a butcher’s wax paper, tied neatly with silk & ivy.

Migration, Labour Markets and the Rescue Industry

This book explodes several myths: that selling sex is completely different from any other kind of work, that migrants who sell sex are passive victims and that the multitude of people out to save them are without self-interest. Laura Agustín makes a passionate case against these stereotypes, arguing that the label 'trafficked' does not accurately describe migrants' lives and that the 'rescue industry' serves to disempower them.
