African American Film Critics Association Dubs

 Dreamgirls Top Film of 2006

By Kam Williams

The African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) has dubbed Dreamgirls as the Best Picture of 2006.  Comprised of 17 leading black  reviewers from all across the nation (including Gil Robertson, Wilson Morales, Lee Bailey, Julian Roman and yours truly), the group selected Forest Whitaker as the year’s Best Actor for his spellbinding performance as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.  And Helen Mirren earned AAFCA recognition as Best Actress 2006 for her equally-uncanny impersonation of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.

Dreamgirls captured additional AAFCA honors, including Eddie Murphy as Best Supporting Actor, Jennifer Hudson as Best Supporting Actress and Bill Condon as Best Director. AAFCA bestowed its Special Achievement Award to Spike Lee, not only in recognition of his work as a director, but also for his contributions to the community away from the set as a social activist.

AAFCA also picked its ten best flicks of the year (see below).
