Elvin Jones Jazz Drummer
By Etheridge Knight
ELVIN JONES
has fire and steel in his hands
rides high, is a Makabe warrior
tastes death on his lips, beats babies
out of worn wombs,
grins with grace,
and cries in the middle of his eyes.
thumps the big circle in bare feet,
opens wide the big arms and,
like the sea,
swallows us.
