Ghana - A Year Ago

This Month March 6, 1958

        (A Reflection)

 By Peter Eric Adotey Addo

One year ago this month

Along the West was born

The red, yellow, and green

With the middle black star.

From Gold Coast as was known

This new nation was born

With the colorful new flag

And Ghana was the name.

Shout the name on house tops

And shout and shout again

For a year ago this month

Was born this nation of ours.

Raise your voices and shout

Oh! Ye sons and daughters, shout

Shout the name of Ghana

And let all Africa hear.

For a year ago this month

In the middle dark night

That colored flag was raised

To proclaim the birth of Ghana.

Red for our comrades dead

Yellow for our wealth

Green for our forest

With the black star of Africa

Raise your voices and shout aloud

For a year ago this month

Was born to us a nation

Along the West of Africa.

Shout the name aloud

And let the world know that

A YEAR ago this month

Was born our native land.
