Dear Rudy,
Well, the issue of Dillard
Today is out now, and your essay on Marcus Christian has
been mailed forth to another 5,000 people at least. I hope you
will approve of the editing I had to do both to accommodate our
space restrictions and to adhere to Dr. Bonner’s instruction
to use less than half of the entire introduction so as to
preserve Xavier Press’ primary rights to the material.
I hope, too, that you are
pleased with the layout and the selection of poems. Your
research will be of great interest to the Dillard alumni
community, as it is to scholars and teachers here and elsewhere.
I wish you success in continuing to mine and illuminate this
material for the rest of us.
Besides my own thanks, I am
extending the thanks of Dr. Michael Lomax, Dillard’s
president, who has a keen personal interest in Dillard as a past
and future center of writers.
On a personal note – if
you are still looking for a job in New Orleans – it is my
understanding that Dillard has received a grant that will enable
it to hire an archivist and a cataloger to begin the task of
sifting through some of the volumes of material that have set
either in library or other campus storage for decades. This is
part of a master plan which includes significant renovation and
expansion of the Dillard library. While the positions have not
yet been advertised (they may be in march), you might send a
letter of inquiry/interest to the new Provost and Vice president
for Academic Affairs, Dr. Bettye Parker Smith, along with your
CV and a notation about having provided us with this wonderful
material.
I hope all is well with
you. If you need more copies, let me know.
Best,
Ralph Adamo
