Me & First Woman

By Rudolph Lewis

She courts Satan with a crooked

stick when frowns smooth on her

face. She turns & climbs up to

Heaven. It is six months before

she reaches God's Throne. Keys

hang from the mantelpiece. She

is gone by Sunday. Butter’s cool

in her mouth. Back home, she locks

up everything, says nothing. She

sings, “A wood pecker makes a

bed go good.” I swell up like a pine

Her Elgin moves carry me down

into a dream, a dream I had last

night. I was broke & hungry, too
