O! I am burned out -- tired -- dead --

And drums are beating in my head.

Should black turn red? When blighting drought 

Burns up the crops throughout the South

And soul must go to fill up the mouth.

Should black turn red? Now, let me think.

How can a black man -- black as ink -- 

Ever be red -- or even pink?

Should black turn red? No -- not before

They've lynched twelve million Negroes more,

And non is found to raise the score!
